Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Habitat for Humanity ReStore?
Habitat ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers. The items we sell are available to the public and similar to what you may see in other home good stores, such as furniture, appliances, a brand-new box of tile you’ve been needing for your bathroom project or a vintage treasure you won’t find anywhere else. However, Habitat ReStores are more than just resell stores.
What happens with my donation? Does it go into a home built by Habitat?
Material donations are not used in Habitat-built homes. Instead, our ReStores sell them at low-cost to the public. The ReStores generate a valuable revenue stream that enables Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity to build more decent, affordable housing for future homebuyers. Your donation not only helps support the construction of Habitat homes, it also helps reduce the costs of home-improvement for other homeowners in our community.
How do Habitat ReStores help the environment?
When items are donated to the ReStore they are kept out of the landfill and given a second chance at life. In fact, from 2022-2023 Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity diverted over 1,694 tons from the landfill. That’s equivalent to 121 dump truck loads!
Are Habitat ReStores open to the public?
We are temporarily closed for regular sales. We will be holding a Liquidation Sale before closing permanently. Please stay tuned to our social media channels, website, and email newsletters for details.
What donations does Habitat ReStore accept?
We are no longer accepting donations.
How soon can you come pick up my donation?
Due to seasonal staffing limitations, donation pick-up is unavailable at this time.
Is there a fee to have my donations picked up?
There is no mandatory fee for pickups. We appreciate a gas donation to offset the cost of fuel. We are extremely appreciative of any contribution you can make to Habitat. The more we save on costs, the more we can do for low-income homeowners!
Can the ReStore pick up donations that are inside my home?
At this time, we are unable to to do pick-ups.
How do I count my donation as a tax deduction?
A LAHFH return envelope, along with a tax receipt will be given to you. Thank you for supporting Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity. Legally, Habitat cannot appraise your donation(s), so all donors must fill out an estimated value for their donation(s) on the receipt. Please keep in mind that you are required by law to fill out IRS Form 8283 for any donation you value at $500 or more. Any donation with a total value of $5,000 or more must also be professionally appraised.
What does a Habitat for Humanity ReStore sell?
Habitat ReStores tend to resemble a home improvement store — a very unique home improvement store. At our ReStore you’ll find items that fit into the following categories: building materials, appliances, furniture, home décor and so much more! The items you’ll find will range from brand new to gently used, and there will likely be a wide range of brands and styles. Of course, that’s not all you’ll find. Because the inventory of the ReStore depends on donations, you never know exactly what you’ll find. We recommend heading to our local Restore today to see what’s in stock! (Of course, you may want to go back next week, too, to see what new items have arrived).
Does the ReStore offer deconstruction services?
Deconstruction, or Salvage, is a service provided by Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity to carefully remove kitchen cabinets, countertops and appliances, doors, windows, trim, and so much more prior to a remodel. The Salvage team completes the removal at no charge with the donation of the items to LAHFH. Salvage also helps prevent thousands of pounds of removed cabinets, countertops and more from ending up in a landfill!
How can I support Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity?

Are the items on your website available for purchase?
No, the pictures you see here are just examples of what we get in. Inventory changes daily, so stop in and see what’s new!
